Vehicle Description
This 1979 Excalibur Phaeton is one of 340 Series III examples built during the last year of the model’s five-year run, and it is powered by a 454ci Chevrolet V8 paired with a three-speed automatic transmission and a limited-slip differential. Finished in two-tone yellow over tan leather upholstery, the car is equipped with a cream-color removable hardtop, a chrome rear luggage rack, air horns, driving lamps, wire wheel covers, side-mounted spare tires, and exposed stainless-steel exhaust headers as well as power steering, power disc brakes, four-wheel independent suspension, air conditioning, a tilt-adjustable steering column, and a Moto-Lita steering wheel. The car was acquired by the selling dealer in October 2024 and now shows 13k miles. This Phaeton Series III is offered with side curtains, tonneau and boot covers, a steamer-style trunk, and a clean Wisconsin title.
The Brooks Stevens-designed Excalibur was produced in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, with styling cues from Mercedes-Benz roadsters of the 1920s and 1930s. They used fiberglass body panels mounted on a square-tube ladder frame with X-member bracing. This example is finished in two-tone yellow with contrasting pinstripes. Exterior features include a cream removable hardtop with four matching side curtains, a chrome light bar with dual driving lamps, a center-hinged hood with louvered panels, and running boards with black rubber treads. The dual side-mounted spare tires have hard covers with top-mounted mirrors, and additional equipment includes solid aluminum alloy bumper bars, quad trumpet-style air horns, triple wipers, wind wings, exposed stainless-steel exhaust headers, a chrome drop-down trunk rack, and rear-fender stone guards.
Painted 15-inch steel wheels are fitted with stainless-steel wire-spoke covers and Cordovan Centron whitewall tires showing 2014 production codes. The fully independent suspension was sourced from the contemporary Corvette, and braking is provided by power-assisted discs at all four corners.
The four-place cabin is upholstered in tan leather with contrasting black carpets. Amenities include air conditioning, a tilt/telescope steering wheel, cruise control, a Sanyo cassette stereo, and a console shifter. Close-up photos that show wear on leather seating surfaces can be viewed in the gallery.
VDO instrumentation includes a 120-mph speedometer, a 7k-rpm tachometer, a quartz clock, and auxiliary gauges that monitor air, oil, and vacuum pressures along with fuel level, coolant temperature, and charging. The five-digit odometer shows 13k miles, approximately 50 of which were added by the selling dealer.
The 454ci Chevrolet V8 was rated at 215 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque when new. It breathes through a four-barrel carburetor and a dual exhaust system composed of four-into-three exhaust manifolds, six exposed stainless-steel headers, and a pair of rear-exit tailpipes.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a TH400 three-speed automatic transmission and a Positraction rear end with a 2.73:1 final gear ratio.
The car is accompanied by tonneau, boot, and trunk covers as well as four side curtains and a steamer-style trunk. Leather handles on the trunk are noted to be brittle and one is seen to be missing.
